Melview Girls Winners Longford Section A Girls Double for Melview NS-Boys & Girls

A record number of teams entered the AVIVA HEALTH FAI schools Longford 5-a- side competition this year. Competition was keen in all sections with last year’s finalists Fermoyle (Boy’s A Cup) and Stonepark (Girl’s A Cup) making a welcome return to home soil albeit with different squads of players. The round robin format applied in all sections and the after 14 teams participated in the girl’s A cup Stonepark (with victories over Drumlish B, Melview Hawks and Colehill) and Melview Eagles (with victories over Fermoyle, Abbeylara and Colmcille) qualified for the final; In the girl’s B Cup five teams from Edgeworthstown, Ballymahon and Newtownforbes competed with Scoil Mhuire Newtownforbes emerged undefeated.

In the boy’s A cup five teams from Abbeylara ,Cloontagh, Fermoyle and Kenagh participated. This was a very hard fought contest with Kenagh eventually winning on goal difference. The boy’s B cup was as competitive as ever with 24 teams participating. Following the round robin format Ballymahon, Killoe, Melview and Stonepark qualified for the semi-finals. Both games were close in the first half, however in the first semi- final Melviewled 2  1 at the break and took control in the second half to win 5 1. The second semi-final was nail biting with Killoe taking an early lead, Stonepark equalized just before half time, in the second half Killoe looked stronger at the beginning and scored a second. Stonepark fought back and went on to win 3-2 with their keeper pulling off a string of great saves.

Well done to all who participated. We look forward to seeing everyone back in action next time!
