The magnificent facilities of The MDL Grounds was the setting for The North Leinster Finals of the Spar Primary 5s on Wed 22nd April. The County Champions from Louth, Meath, Longford and Westmeath battled it out in glorious sunshine in a bid to reach next week’s Leinster Finals at the same venue.
Each school team played three games against their counterparts from the other three counties in a round-robin format with the top team advancing to the provincial decider next Thursday 30th April. This year’s competition again provided a high standard of football in each of the five sections, three for boys and two for girls . The top team in each section advanced as clear winners of their group with Westmeath emerging as this year’s top county with two winning schools and one provincial finalist from each county of Louth, Meath and Longford.
Section A Boys for small schools saw Louth’s Scoil Naomh Bríd from Ardaghy, advance for the first time ever but only after a defeat in their second game. In their first game they had beaten St. Dominic’s 3-1 only to lose 7-2 to Boher before recovering their composure to beat runners-up Mount Hanover 3-1 in a thrilling encounter.
Section A Girls for small/medium schools saw Longford’s Stonepark NS emerge as emphatic winners with three straight wins over Rampark NS from Louth (6-2), Meath Champions Kenttstown by 3-1 and Ardnagrath (Westmeath) by 2-1.
Section B Boys saw Boyerstown NS from Meath also advance with a 100% record with impressive wins over Stonepark from Longford by 3-0, Collon (Louth) by 7-1 and a closely fought 3-2 win over Mount Temple(Westmeath)
Section B Girls was another group to see the winners emerge with three straight wins as St.Colmcille’s of Mullingar impressed with 1-0 win over Scoil Mhuire,1-0 over Bay Estate Dundalk and a crucial 2-0 win over Dunboyne Co.Meath.
Section C Boys saw a fiercely competitive group conclude with Westmeath school St.Echen’s from Kinnegad as Leinster finalists.However they had to pull out all the stops to overcome a gallant St.Malachy’s Friary school of Dundalk by 5-4 in the game of the tournament.This was followed by a comprehensive 3-1 over Gaelscoil Longfort with the deciding game against a skillful Ratoath school from Meath, resulting in a thrilling 2-2 draw.
Afterwards co-ordinator Mark Scanlon, the newly appointed FAI National Co-ordinator for Schools and Third Level Football, thanked everybody for contributing towards a marvellous day’s competition. Sponsors Spar were again very well represented on the day and praised the high standard of football and excellent fair play throughout the tournament. The FAI’s Mark Scanlon and Paul Osam, along with Spar representatives, made presentations to winners and runners -up in each of the five sections. The 5 winners now advance to the Leinster Finals on 30th April in Navan.
