SCHOOL PROFILES
St.Colman's (Mullingar): Their last appearance in Leinster finals was in 2000. The Mullingar lads defeated local rivals CBS in their county final before ousting a highly fancied St.Malachy's Dundalk in Nth Leinster Finals. Managers are Kevin Smyth ( Mullingar Athletic's longest serving player ) and Willie Geraghty. Conor Gilsenan demonstrated his silken skills in Croke Park at half time of Westmeath v Kildare on Sunday last.
St.Paul's (Portlaoise): Captain Aidan Dadoo moved to Ireland from South Africa last year. Top Scorer with 11 goals is Martin Staunton who is a cousin of ex-Ireland, Liverpool & Aston Villa defender Steve Staunton. Antonio Nikolov comes from Sofia in Bulgaria and brings an exciting dimension to the team that is unbeaten this year so far. Eoin Farrell is the keeper and the team is managed by Kieran Brosnan.
St.Anne's (Dublin): Aidan Bracken's charges will play in 11-a-side Dublin schools final in Tolka Park on 8th June. Some of the team play for Dublin's u-14 GAA team . School has entered 5-a-side for first time ever this year ! The Shankill girls beat Tom Bolger's school Quarryvale in Dublin South final. Tom was recently appointed Chairman of FAI Schools.
Duleek: Duleek have Father David Brennan on the management team along with teacher Ann McDonnell . Fr David is a fully qualified FAI coach and obtained his first badge from none other than Sean McCaffrey, our special guest today! School secretary Carol has a daughter playing on the team. Many of the girls were on the Duleek team that won the Drogheda u-12 Cup recently.
Rathbeggan: Rathbeggan Boys have won County Finals in Gaelic, Soccer and Hurling this year. Captain is Darragh Timoney a member of the successful u-12 Ratoath Harps F.C team .Manager is Principal Kieran Rushe. Only their second year ever competing in soccer compettions. Overcame Paul Holland's Gaelscoil na Rithe 6-4 in Meath Final, which was the biggest section in Ireland this year (39 teams). Beat Melview (Longford) and CBS Dundalk to advance to today's finals.
Wilkinstown: Runners Up to Leugh (Tipperary) in All-Ireland Finals last year. Andrew Tolan is captain and top scorer for Michael Forry's lads. His cousin Wayne Tolan also plays on the school team. Most of the lads line out for local Torro F.C. Beat Dunderry in Meath final but needed a golden goal to oust Culmullen in the semi-final! Located 5 miles outside Navan.
Culmullen: Culmullen girls also have won the GAA County final this year. A hat-trick by Laura Mc Mahon and two goals from Niamh Kelleher proved decisive in their 5-2 win over Ardcath in the Meath final. Defeated Callystown (Louth) and Ballinagore(Westmeath) in North Leinster Finals. Amy McQuillan's dad,Martin plays GAA for Armagh. Manager is Joe Geraghty.
Durrow: Our Lady's Meadow Durrow played Raheen, The Paddock, St Abbans Killeen to qualify for the final of the Laois Cup. The final was a close encounter with Durrow winning by the narrowest of the margins. In the mid Leinster blitz they beat The Rock and Scoil Bhríde Milltown to set up a final meeting with Seir Kieran of Offaly by 1-0. Boys advanced to Leinsters last year also. Ann Purcell is Durrow's teacher, involved in coaching the boys.
Poulfur (Wexford) have the longest journey today,coming all the way from Hook Head,more than 3 hours drive. Poulfur have two teams representing the Wexford region today! Girls won All-Ireland Final in 2003 with three players from that team playing today, Evelyn Power, Patrice Foley and Bríd Doyle . The teams are managed by Feargal Murphy.
Boolavogue Boys are managed by Eleanor Whelan who is the secretary of the school! They beat Courtnacedey in the South Leinster final .The team also reached the All-Ireland Final last year .The school's hurling team have also reached the County Final this year.
St.John Bosco's (Navan rd) Past pupils include ex-Aston Villa player and current Bohs manager Gareth Farrelly and Ken O'Doherty ( ex-Crystal Palace). Manger of school team is Gillian Ryan who played for Ireland u-16 girls team ! Captain is Shane Darcy whose mum Mairéad is a teacher in the school
St.Lorcan's (Palmerstown): Leinster's only All-Ireland Champions from last year ( St.Lorcan's first ever soccer title! ). Managed by Ken Keoghan. Past Pupils include Jeff Kenna (Ireland and Derby County) and Glenn Whelan (Sheff.Wed).
St.Laurence O'Toole's (Girls). Past pupils include two players from the current Ireland Senior Women's International team, Michelle Kane and Olivia O'Toole, who regularly assist in coaching the school team from The Sherrif St /North Wall area. Aodán O Riordáin is coach of the team that haven't been beaten in Dublin's 11-a-side since 2002!!
St.Laurence O'Toole's (Boys) Principal Mark Condon's main claim to fame is that he grew up in The Royal County! (Batterstown) which is beside his team's opponents today, Rathbeggan!. All the players on the panel have nicknames e.g Gerry" Gerrard" Brennan. Manager is "Benitez" Bailey. Craig" Striker" Harris and Carlos Donovan have helped the school enjoy their best ever season with Carlos reputed to have a better front flip than Robbie Keane!!
Queen of Angels: Managed by West Cork man, Finbarr O'Driscoll , who once refereed a Senior Ladies GAA All-Ireland final in Croke Park ! All-Ireland runners up in 1999 . Past pupils include James Keddy (ex-Derry City and Bohs). Before winning the South Dublin final on 12th May the school's Confirmation celebrations earlier in the day had to be interrupted ! To their credit, Mark Tobin, Seán Slevin and Kevin Wall had no hesitation in delaying their festivities, promptly exchanging their best attire for the soccer gear and returning to the party straight away afterwards!
St.Mary's Saggart : First time ever to take part in five-a-side. Managed by Terry O'Rourke ,Ireland's most famous Linfield & Rangers supporter! Has collection of 27,000 soccer soccer programes!St.Mary's have a great record this year, being unbeaten in both 5 and 11-a-sides.Saggart include Daniel Purdy, son of Richie Purdy (ex-Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk) and two talented African born players, keeper Hermen Opelele from The Congo and Ajibolah Sule from Nigeria.The school itself has an amazing 60% of its pupils who were born outside of Ireland!
St.Patrick's Portarlington In Laois finals pipped Ballylinan in the final game after both teams had won four games each. Managed by Stephen Terry, the lads topped the group in the Mid-Leinster finals ahead of Durrow (Offaly). Along the way they beat The Heath 5 -2 , Rathangan (Kildare) 2-1 and Durrow(Laois) 5-2.
Kennedy Park. From Wexford town ,the school provides both a boys and girls team in the finals today. .Managers are Tony Cleary and Aisling Lannigan. Many of its past pupils are currently playing for the successful u-18 Wexford League team to have reached this year's National Final. The u-18 squad is managed by well known millionaire and soccer fantatic Mick Wallace . The local club Wexford Albion , whose grounds are nearby, have been great support to the school over the years. Ireland's rugby star Gordon D'arcy also attended the school.
St.Oliver Plunkett's Malahide became All-Ireland champions in 2002 when they beat Scoil Ide from Limerick in the final. From that team Niamh McEvoy was on the Irish u-15 team that beat England recently. Managed by Joe Morton, the Malahide school has won the North Dublin five-a-side finals on six occasions.
The Heath : First time ever to take part in any type of soccer competition .School team managed by Michael Dowling . Located 3 miles outside Portlaoise. Aoife Quane played in goals for Portlaoise in Leinster final of Community Games last year. Maureen Nerney was the lucky mascot in Croke Park for The Laois Ladies G.AA team when they won the Senior All-Ireland title!
Scoil Bhríde Knockmay near Portlaoise, managed by teacher Deirdre Kenny and Tommy Mulligan. They qualified for Leinsters by beating Ballymany (Kildare) and Mountmellick (Offaly) with a penalty and a superb free kick proving decisive. Both goals were scored by top scorer Ellen Healy.
