SECTION B BOYS FINALS (Medium –Sized Schools)

Wednesday 22nd April saw the the tournament’s biggest Section B Boys being completed from an initial entry of 48 teams. Twelve group winners from the earlier round in March battled it out for the right to represent Meath in the next stage of the National competition.  Group 1 saw Athboy emerge as convincing winners against Kilcloon and Carlanstown. Group 2 was won by Kentstown who defeated Gaelscoil Na Rithe in a tense decider by 3-2 after both sides had defeated Dangan. In Group 3 the last game again decided the winners with Rathbeggan prevailing by 3-1 against Robinstown .The final group  saw newcomers Stackallen advance after wins over Skryne and Whitecross.  Athboy were first to book their place in the final overcoming Rathbeggan by 3-2 in a nailbiting semi-final. Stackallen were most impressive in a 3-0 victory over Kentstown.

The final between last year’s champions Athboy and first time entrants Stackallen was closely fought in the first half and after some great saves by Stackallen keeper Thomas McGuiness the score was 1-1 at the break. However the turning point in the game saw Stackallen lose key player Keith Timmons due to injury and although Louis Timmons and Robert Garry battled hard, Barry McGann’s Athboy side stepped up a gear with superb hat-tricks from captain Luke Swaine and Jamie McGrath. Keeper Aaron Doherty pulled off some crucial saves to see Athboy retain their county title in some style.

SECTION A GIRLS (small schools)

Kentstown 1 Enfield 0

Kentstown girls won their first ever county title when overcoming the brave challenge of Enfield in a thrilling final. Kentstown ,managed by Fiona Mahon, had earlier ousted a spirited Newtown side in their 1-0 semi-final win through a superb strike from Shauna Fitzgerald. Amazingly half of the Kentstown squad come from the one family as captain Keeva Commons played alongside her sister Ruth (who scored the winning goal in the final) and their cousins Áine and Róisín. The other semi-final saw Enfield eventually overcoming Kilmessan by 2-1 in a penalty shootout after the sides had finished 2-2 A.E.T. with captain Chloe Silke scoring for her side before saving two Kilmessan penalties.

SECTION A BOYS ( Small Schools)

Moynalty were hugely impressive as they were crowned Meath Champions for the first time. Over the course of seven games in the tournament keeper Jonathon Lynch amazingly only conceded one single goal! In their semi-final they had beaten a skilful Wilkinstown side by 2-0 while Ardcath produced an amazing comeback to beat Drumconrath by 3-2 on penalties.

Drumconrath had raced into a 4 goal lead and seemed to be heading for the final until Ardcath scored an amazing 4 second half goals to force the game into extra-time and penalties.

MOYNALTY 7 ARDCATH 1

In the final Moynalty dominated and although Ardcath showed their battling qualities the slick passing and teamwork of Moynalty was crucial throughout . Karl McGuiness and Richard O’Sullivan impressed for Ardcath and Moynaltys Patrick Farrelly and Patrick Byrne took centre stage in an awesome display by Sarah Currans boys.
